Howard Brotman; Emergence and the Photographs of Madelyn Bradley Opening Reception

Date:
Friday, September 30th, 6-9pm Show continues until October 29th.

Howard Brotman was born in Philadelphia, PA and attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY majoring in drawing and illustration. He established himself as a conceptual graphic artist in New York City for 10 years and left the field to pursue other interests. In 2004, while living in Manhattan, he re-visited art again after twenty-some years and studied figure drawing at the Art Students League. Upon his return to art in early 2006, he moved away from the classic, academic methodology and began to explore his interest in minimal, geometric art.

Since relocating back to the Philadelphia area in 2008, Mr. Brotman has explored the grid and developed several series around this minimalistic format such as Dark SpotAbstracted Details and Leaves. His most recent work is a conscious movement away from structure, using paint intuitively and allowing it to evolve into a more organic form. His paintings come from a subconscious space which lets the work emerge as it comes to life.

His work has been exhibited at several local venues including a two-man show at Abstract Expressions Gallery in Mount Holly NJ, the Commerce Square buildings in Center City Philadelphia PA, The Cheltenham Center for the Arts Philadelphia PA (juried show) and the Nichols Berg Gallery in Chestnut Hill Philadelphia PA. His work is part of several private collections in Philadelphia and Bucks County.
